CORAL GABLES, FL – DEC 14 Arthur Murray International congratulates Nothumbria University in Scotland for groundbreaking social research that confirms what men and women in the dance world have known for centuries: women are skilled judges of men’s dance moves as a means of judging their health, strength and attractiveness as potential mates.

“The study is fancinating to us in the dance world. By using the latest in 3D motion capture technology, these researchers drilled down to the precise moves that women identify as indicators of a good partner. This totally validates what we have told our men students for years – women love men who can dance,” said Thomas Murdock, Vice President Marketing and Promotions at Arthur Murray International, the iconic global dance organization.

This particular study, from Northumbria’s School of Life Sciences, filmed 19 male volunteers with a 3D camera as they danced to a basic rhythm. Their movements were mapped onto featureless avatars that were then presented to a group of 25 women who were asked to rate their physical attractiveness.

As it turns out, Elvis was right on target: large and varied movements involving the neck and the trunk made all the difference.

There have been many studies that have proven the power of dance when it comes to attracting women to men. What does this mean on the dance floor?

According to Murdock, popular dances that move these body parts include the Tango, which involves quick head movements, and the Salsa which uses syncopated body rhythms to express the music.

The study, led by psychologist Dr Nick Neave and researcher Kristofor McCarty, was published in the Royal Society Journal Biology Letters. Northumbria is an internationally acclaimed modern university in the heart of the historic City of Newcastle upon Tyne in the North East of England.

Only good things can happen when you combine unique, customized ballroom dance instruction with food! Over the past few years, our Cafe Day theme has become a popular and fun day filled with fellowship and friendship among our students and teachers, alike.

So what’s the point of Cafe Day anyway? To expose all students of varying dance levels and skills to dance instructors other than their regular teachers from their own studios. It is wise to gain insight in your Ballroom and Latin skills from multiple sources,  this ensures you are getting a healthy amount of perspective on things as you continue to learn to dance. If you are working specifically on leading better as a male in Salsa and Swing, or needing to contribute with more strength as a female in Tango and Viennese Waltz, then your dance instructor would specify this skill set for your Cafe Day teacher to work on and expose you to a different point of view.

Ballroom, Latin and Swing dance instructors from each of our studios here in northern New Jersey will be present and ready to work with you, but it isn’t free! This is where the food part comes in. The price of admission is a covered dish of your choice! Dance students select one of their favorite dishes and bring in a healthy amount of it to feed the starving, dancing masses. Hot or cold, food or wine (with emphasis on the wine), appetizer or entree, just about everything is welcome.

While learning to ballroom dance it is important to have the opportunity afforded to the dance student to apply what is learned in private and group dance instruction. The Team Match is a casual and friendly competition between the Chatham, Roxbury, Denville, and Ridgewood studios for sole possession of the trophy and bragging rights…at least until the next Team Match when the previous winner must defend the title!

Each participating student gets the experience of a great social dancing event along with sharing studio camaraderie, fellowship, and support for one another. All of our social & competitive dance events are designed for each and every level of dance student, from beginner to advanced, enjoys an encouraging environment.

The New Jersey Classic – A Springtime Tradition

There is a certain excitement that goes along with the arrival of March each year. This is the time each year when we are already gearing up for the first big event of the year, the New Jersey Classic Competition and Dinner Dance!

Held in the beautiful Madison Hotel, this is the day-long event that sets the tone for the rest of the year to come. Those who are learning Social Ballroom Dancing or Competitive Ballroom and Latin techniques have a place here as they showcase their progress by demonstrating basic to intermediate dancing patterns and movements in a fun and encouraging environment!

The day is packed with dance performances ranging from the Foxtrot and Waltz to the Tango, Swing, and Cha Cha. As evening approaches, we begin to exit the ballroom and change over to dinner attire and, following a cocktail hour, we head back into the ballroom for dinner and an Awards presentation!

World Dance-O-Rama 2012 at the New York Sheraton!

Where else would it be? New York is the prime location for one of Arthur Murray International’s most attended and glamorous events – the World Dance-O-Rama!

Dance-O-Ramas are held throughout each year in various locations all over the globe. They are held over a period of four days with itineraries, trips, Competitive and Social Ballroom dancing, dinners, tours, and Professional Ballroom & Latin Dance shows!
